Macom to acquire Applied Micro for US$770m to accelerate data business growth

US chipmaker Macom Technology Solutions Holdings is buying rival Applied Micro Circuits Corp for US$770m to bolster its offering of semiconductor technologies for optical, wireless and satellite networks. It is the latest in a raft of consolidation deals amongst chipmakers that are all looking to gain scale in an increasingly competitive market.

Liberty eyes new M&A opportunities as CWC deal closes

Liberty Global has completed its £3.5bn (US$5bn) acquisition of Caribbean and Latin American telco Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC), saying the enlarged company is well placed to pursue additional consolidation opportunities across the region. Liberty CEO Mike Fries has said the company plans to distribute 67% of its Latin American and Caribbean group (LiLAC) tracking stock to shareholders, noting that its market capitalisation will be about US$7bn.

Liberty shareholders green light CWC purchase

Liberty Global has won approval from shareholders for its proposed £3.6bn (US$5.2bn) acquisition of Caribbean telco Cable & Wireless Communications. The John-Malone-backed cable giant said in a statement that over 99% of votes cast at the general meeting of shareholders today were in favour of the deal, representing some 86% of all outstanding votes.

Altice and Cablevision contend deal poses no threat

Altice’s proposed US$17.7bn acquisition of the US operator Cablevision Systems poses no threat to competition, would afford the target benefits of scale, and reduce vertical integration, the companies said in a transfer application filed with the FCC. As such, they have called for a quick review.
